Islamabad to Skardu by road
Skardu is the gateway to some of the highest mountains in the world, and the road trip from Islamabad is part of the experience. The usual route goes through Abbottabad, Mansehra, Besham, Dasu and Chilas on the Karakoram Highway, then towards Jaglot and the Skardu road. In summer you can also use the shorter Naran, Babusar Top and Chilas link when it is open. Read our full Islamabad to Skardu route and the by-road guide.
Why a Land Cruiser with driver?
Long mountain days are tiring. A Land Cruiser with a professional driver gives comfort on the highway and the ground clearance and stability needed for Deosai and the rougher side roads. The driver knows the safe halts, the fuel points and which sections to cross early in the day. See the Land Cruiser V8 on our cars page.
A sample plan
- Day 1: Islamabad to Besham or Chilas, with a stop at Abbottabad or Naran side if time allows.
- Day 2: Chilas to Skardu through Gilgit and the Skardu road.
- Day 3: Upper Kachura Lake and Shangrila Resort, then Satpara Lake or Kharpocho Fort.
- Day 4: Deosai National Park and Sheosar Lake (summer only).
- Day 5: Shigar valley and fort, then the Cold Desert near the airport.
- Day 6 and 7: return to Islamabad, or add Hunza on the way back.
Deosai, Shangrila and Kachura
Deosai is a high plateau at around 4,100 m. It is open only in the warm months and the weather can change in minutes, so start early and carry warm clothes. Shangrila Resort on Lower Kachura Lake is the most famous stop near Skardu, and Upper Kachura Lake is quieter. Shigar is a calm green valley and a good contrast after the dry mountains. Learn more in the Deosai guide and on the Skardu page.
Season and road tips
- Late May to early October is the safest window. Deosai is usually open from about July.
- Monsoon rain (July and August) can cause landslides on the highway, so keep one spare day.
- Start long drives at sunrise and avoid mountain roads after dark.
- Carry your original CNIC or passport, because checkposts may ask for it.
- Keep cash, a power bank and warm clothes in the car.
