Islamabad to Deosai National Park: How to Get There, When to Go and Which Vehicle

Deosai, the high plateau known as the Land of Giants, sits at roughly 4,100 metres between Skardu and Astore. It is one of the most photographed places in Pakistan and it is only open for a short season. Here is how to plan it properly.

The short answer

What Deosai is

Deosai National Park is a high-altitude alpine plain in Gilgit-Baltistan, between the Skardu and Astore districts. In summer it is covered in wildflowers and streams. Sheosar Lake and the Bara Pani area are the best-known stops, and the park is home to the Himalayan brown bear, so wildlife rules and a safe distance matter.

Two ways in

Both sides are best done with a driver who knows the road and the weather for the day.

  • From Skardu: drive towards Sadpara and onto the plateau. The park entrance is roughly 30 to 40 km from Skardu and the road is rough, so it is a full-day trip.
  • From Astore: cross the plateau towards Skardu, or reach Astore on the way from Islamabad. This side is often combined with Rama Meadows and the Nanga Parbat views.

When Deosai is open

Snow keeps the plateau closed for most of the year. The practical window is roughly June to September, with the flowers at their best in July and early August. Weather changes quickly at this altitude, so we plan early starts and advise you on the day. Confirm road status before you travel, because it depends on snow and the season.

Vehicle and what to carry

The plateau road is unpaved and rough in places, so a 4x4 is the right choice: Land Cruiser, Prado, Fortuner or a Revo. Carry warm layers even in summer, water, snacks, sun protection and a power bank. Altitude can cause headaches, so go slowly and rest if you feel unwell.
