Islamabad to Hunza by Car With Driver: Spots, Hotels, Days and Best Season

Hunza is the most loved valley in Pakistan for visitors from home and abroad: forts, glaciers, apricot orchards and views of Rakaposhi. It is a long journey on the Karakoram Highway, so a rested, experienced driver is essential.

The short answer

The Karakoram Highway route

From Islamabad the road passes Abbottabad, Mansehra, Besham and Chilas, then reaches Gilgit and continues to Karimabad in Hunza. The Babusar route through Naran is shorter in summer but seasonal.

Best places to visit in Hunza

  • Baltit Fort and Karimabad bazaar.
  • Altit Fort, the older fort with a quiet village below.
  • Attabad Lake, the turquoise lake with boat rides.
  • Hussaini Suspension Bridge and the Passu Cones.
  • Passu glacier and Borith Lake.
  • Khunjerab Pass, one of the highest border crossings in the world.
  • Eagle's Nest viewpoint at Duikar for sunrise and sunset.

Where visitors stay

Karimabad has hotels with Rakaposhi views, such as the well-known Hunza Embassy Hotel, and Duikar has Eagle's Nest. Passu and Gulmit have guesthouses for glacier visitors. We are an independent car with driver service, not a hotel agent: confirm rooms and rates with the hotel, and book early in summer.

Best time to go

April to October is the main window, with cherry blossom and apricot flowers in spring and autumn colour in October. Winters are cold and the Khunjerab Pass is closed to ordinary travel for much of the winter, so ask us before planning.

Vehicle choice

A Prado, Land Cruiser or Fortuner is comfortable for the long road. A Revo carries luggage and gear, and a Coaster suits larger groups. Tell us your passengers and we confirm the right vehicle for your dates.
